'Brick' blows TOMB critic away
A preview of one of the best films of 2006 thus far.
Apr 6 2006
A quick heads up from The TOMB – we caught a screening of a film called 'Brick' last week and can honestly say it's one of the most gripping, dynamic and original debuts we've seen in years
Written and directed by first-timer Rian Johnson, it harks back to the classic detective and film noirs of old.
The gripping plot revolves around a troubled teen's efforts to discover the whereabouts of his missing ex-girlfriend, and it's full of unexpected twists and turns as well as note-perfect performances from the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt ('Mysterious Skin') and Emilie de Ravin ('The Hills have Eyes').
Throw in a dash of Dashiell Hammett, a sprinkle of Raymond Chandler, and some of the finest hard-boiled dialogue this side of Elmore Leonard, and the result is a cult classic in the making.
The film is out on May 12 and we've got an exclusive Time Out screening coming soon, but if you can't wait until then, check out the trailer on our Top Ten list here.
