Wimbledon star Kirsten Dunst is keen to portray France's most controversial Queen, Marie Antoinette, in the forthcoming historical drama about her life, which is being written and directed by Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola.
Marie Antoinette (1755-93) has been famously miscast in faux-history as the spoilt Queen of Louis XVI who is largely blamed for instigating the French Revolution. Antonia Fraser's detailed biography, 'Marie Antoinette: The Journey', on which the film is based, provides a more historically accurate, intimate account of Antoinette's life, from the 14-year-old girl sent from Vienna to marry the future Louis XVI to the woman who became the scapegoat of the Ancient Regime sent to the guillotine.
Jason Schwartzman - star of Rushmore and cousin to Sofia - will be playing Louis.
Production is due to begin in February 2005 on location in France.
