'Superman' soars in US

'Superman Returns' opens with a $21m haul in the States.

Jun 30 2006

'Superman Returns' soared at the US box office on Wednesday, flying to the top of the chart faster than a speeding bullet.

Bryan Singer's superhero epic, which stars Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth and Brandon Routh, took $21m from 3,915 North American locations, giving it the eighth biggest Wednesday launch in history.

With Independence Day falling on a Tuesday this year, and many Americans taking the Monday off, the film is now set to have a massive seven-day haul.

It also topped the charts in the four other territories in which the film opened – Australia, South Korea, Thailand and the Philippines – and will doubtless do the same when it opens in the UK on July 14.

It's a chick flick, pure and simple. There is action and big scenes, yes, but far too much concentration on the angst of Superman - also, it's not like Superman to have left earth without saying anything to anyone (especially after he had promised to the President in Superman 2 that he would always be there for the people!). The film is an amazing spectacle but fails to capture the fun and sense of adventure that Superman should have. Even Singer has said that this is his first chick flick! It could have been so much better. Posted on Jul 13 2006 03:20

All of the people out in the world who have seen Superman returns and have said that it was borring, bad film, rubbish, what ever, YOU CAN'T OF READ A SUPERMAN COMIC BOOK! I have not seen the movie yet but I will this Friday and just from trailers too movie clips this is the perfect cast, story and director that has brought Superman back to our hearts after 26 years of the brilliant Superman 2. When Superman defeated Zod, Ursa & Non in the fortruss of Solitude. People said that this was almost a remake of legand Richard Donner's Superman from 1978, if you fools haven't realised Super comes back to earth after 6 years of looking for Krypton finding that everything has changed apart from Super's love for Lois, rules that he lives by and Luthor's ego to find out more about Superman & growth of hatred for super sending him to jail twice and suriving his plans to destroy him twice! Wouldn't that piss you off for the last time! For me Superman returns has replaced 3 & 4. Brian Singer has cast the perfect actors to play this new movie, the perfect continuing story to 2 Superman movies made in 78 & 80 that's connected to a franchise that has lived in peoples hearts as this wonderful picture of our greatest hero on screen. I must confess Reeve made me believe if I wear a tight skin superman costume I will fly and from clips of Superman returns Routh has made me believe once again! I found out about Superman returns in October 05 and when I saw that teaser trailer for the first time I sivered & went cold, due to the classic tune on the trailer & Brando's voice. God's honest, because my favourite superhero was returning to us and to my heart I only wish I could meet and sit with this super cast & director at the UK preview on the 13th July and say thank you you've brought a dream back to my heart.
