'Cars' crash at London box office
Superman clings on to the top spot while the latest Pixar pic enters the chart at four.
Aug 2 2006
'Superman Returns' continues to soar at the London box office, retaining the top spot and scoring a very healthy £149,221 after three weeks on release.
Below Supes, 'The Break-Up' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest' swapped places at two and three with the romantic comedy achieving the ascendancy.
However, the big story of the weekend was the poor debut of the latest Pixar pic 'Cars'. The heavily hyped film entered the chart at four, taking just £118,553 from 19 screens, a woeful haul for what was thought to be one of the most bankable releases of the year and a sign that perhaps the Pixar bubble has burst.
Luc Besson's fantasy drama 'Angel-A' was the only other new entry, coming straight in at number six, while kids' flick 'Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties' inexplicably continues to attract an audience at number seven.
And finally, after a valiant six weeks on the chart, Time Out favourite 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley' appears to be on its last legs at ten.
Next week, expect Michael Mann's 'Miami Vice' to finally knock the Man of Steel off the top spot.
