'Singin' in the Rain' simply the best

The song and dance classic is named greatest movie musical by the AFI.

Sep  5 2006

'Singin' in the Rain' was crowned 'greatest movie musical' by the American Film Institute over the weekend.

The announcement was made at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday night as part of a concert program presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

More than 500 composers, musicians and critics selected their top 25 movie musicals, with 'West Side Story' coming second and 'The Wizard of Oz' third.

Further down the list there were places for 'Cabaret', 'The King and I', 'Moulin Rogue!' and my own personal favourite, 'My Fair Lady', although 'South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut' (which includes the touching toe-tapper 'Kyle's Mom's a Bitch') somehow failed to make the cut.
