The Irish rockers shot 700 hours of 3-D footage for a forthcoming feature during their recent tour.

U2 are set to go 3-D in a new concert film set for release in specially equipped cinemas next summer.

Directors Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington shot 700 hours of footage of the band as they toured Argentina, Mexico, Chile and Brazil earlier this year, in what they are calling the 'first ever 3-D multicamera live shoot'.

Discussions are under way with several major studios about distribution, and it is hoped the film will screen using the same Real D technology that will be used for the 3-D release of 'Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas' later this year.

U2 are also considering taking part in the first ever live 3-D performance projected in cinemas, though whether seeing huge three dimensional images of the band on the big screen will be even better than the real thing remains to be seen.
