'Apocalypto' hits the London box office

Mel Gibson's Mayan epic takes the top spot on the London chart.

In spite of a year of bad press, Mel Gibson still managed to destroy the opposition at the box office this weekend, his new film 'Apocalypto' crashing into the top ten at number one.

The film took a whopping £184,234 from 21 screens, which contributed to Gibbo's Mayan epic achieving the biggest ever opening weekend for a foreign language film in the UK.

That meant that Ben Stiller's so-called comedy 'Night at the Museum' dropped to number two after two weeks on release, while tearjerking biopic 'Miss Potter' was a new entry at number three.

The rest of the chart is a non-event, with 'A Prairie Home Companion' the only other new entry, coming straight in at a disappointing nine.

Next week, 'The Last King of Scotland' should give 'The Pursuit of Happyness' a run for its money at the top, though doubtless Will Smith's misspelt feel-good drama will come out on top.
