Scorsese finally wins an Oscar

'The Departed' was the big winner at this year's Academy Awards, walking away with four gongs.

Last night's lacklustre and predictable Oscar ceremony will nevertheless be etched into the minds of moviegoers forever thanks to Martin Scorsese receiving a long overdue best director award for 'The Departed'.

The oft-nominated helmer received the Oscar from old friends Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, and requested that the envelope be checked before accepting the award.

Elsewhere, there was little in the way of surprise, with Alan Arkin's defeat of Eddie Murphy in the best supporting actor category the only upset of the major awards.

As expected, Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker took the lead acting honours, while Jennifer Hudson was named best supporting actress.

The big disappointment of the night was the hosting performance of Ellen DeGeneres, whose humourless delivery made the five-hour running time seem more like five days. Somebody bring back Billy Crystal quick-smart.

Elsewhere 'The Departed' and 'Little Miss Sunshine' won the screenplay awards, while 'Happy Feet' won best animated feature and 'The Lives of Others' was named best foreign film.

To round-up, 'The Departed' took home four awards, 'Pan's Labyrinth' three and 'Dreamgirls', 'Little Miss Sunshine' and 'An Inconvenient Truth' all walked away with two.
