Aronofsky challenges 'The Fighter'

Darren Aronofsky is in talks to direct Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon in 'The Fighter'.

Mar 27 2007

Last month Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg announced plans to make a sporting biopic called 'The Fighter', about Boston boxer 'Irish' Micky Ward. Well now the film has a director attached, and it's suddenly jumped to the top of my 'must see' list.

For that director is Darren Aronofsky, whose 'Pi', 'Requiem for a Dream' and (to a lesser extent) 'The Fountain' challenged cinemagoers with their incredible visuals and trippy accounts of existential angst.

How Aronofsky's unique style will translate to a sporting pic remains to be seen, but should he and his two stars like Paul Attanasio's current rewrite of the script, then production could start as early as this summer in Massachusetts.
