Danny Boyle tackles 'Slum Dog Millionaire'
Exclusive: The 'Sunshine' helmer tells us all about his next project.
Apr 5 2007
I spoke to the always affable Danny Boyle yesterday for our 'Sunshine' podcast, and when the subject turned to his next film, it seems I had my facts wrong. Rather than making South African-set thriller 'Ponte Tower' (as previously reported), Boyle is about to start work on a very different sort of film, as he himself explained.
'It's called 'Slum Dog Millionaire', it's based on a true story, and it's about a kid from the slums of Mumbai, who has nothing – he's ill educated, he's illiterate – and he goes on the Hindi version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' and wins it. And they can't believe that he's done it. They think he's cheated. They think he's getting signals from embedded chips in his body, or that there are people coughing in the audience, but he won it.
'What's clever about the film is that the structure shows you how he knows the answers. Certain things have happened to him in his life and they happen to ask questions about those things. But the real reason he's on the show is to get in touch with the girl he loves but has lost in the chaos of Mumbai, and all he knows is that she watches the show religiously. So he's not even there to win the money, but that's when you win I suppose, when you're not even trying.'
Simon Beaufoy ('The Full Monty') has written the script, with filming set to start on location in Mumbai soon. And as for 'Ponte Tower', that film is still very much on Boyle's horizon, with Michael Thomas currently working on the script.

- Saw the film and loved it. Raw imagery, story telling, One of the best "independent" films ever made. People forget that this was an independent film, if you dont like this film, i bet you have not watched many "indy" films much. Its opened the eyes of those whom are more fortunate (hence on a computer commenting on this film) and despite those critics, it deserves all it awards it recieves because people dont realise how hard it is to make a movie like this with non-hollywood budgets. I would even dare to say that the India government would probably have not allowed this film to be done if they had known it would be watched by so many for being a indy film (Originally planned to be lost to DVD shelves) because it's hardly a "tourism" movie. For those that dislike the feel good happy endings, shame on you, its a movie after all! Posted on Feb 23 2009 10:04

- To whoever got lung cancer - India doesnt need people like you, you are a disease all by yourself buddy. We are one billion people living in a 'democratic' country, yes everything is not ok....true. But if you really care, and doesnt sound like you do - you need to come back and do your bit, not criticise coz like most NRIs who are headless chickens.......dont fit into the West, but love to criticise their own country. Yes those countries have structure and planning, but our country has heritage and culture. It would be great if we had both, and we are working on it! Slumdog Millionaire was about the spirit of Mumbai.....its very worst, and its very best! I loved the old woman who gave her blessings in the end....it embodied the spirit of the film. good for Rehman , Gulzar and Resul for bringing home 3 Oscars! Posted on Feb 23 2009 05:52

What was the sermon Freida ?
Also, do you feel you have enough familiarity with the life and culture in the Indian Slums beyond what you have comprehended from the movie, to make your arguments ?

- When I watched this movie I felt like I was being preached at in church. First the boys lose their Mother through Muslim bashing. Then they go to live with a guy who exploits them, they show a phone bank and an angry Scottish woman wants to speak to someone in her country, we are supposed to feel bad for him, but I could totally relate to her, what is happening when you spend $1700 for a computer and have to speak to someone in India to troubleshoot for you. The Americans in the film were made to look like fools too, and Germans so basically every white person is a pompous ass. I cannot get the picture of the litttle girl standing in the rain, or the plight of these kids. But, the film would have been much better if he did not underestimate the intelligence of the American Public by preaching to them. It could get a nomination because the hollywood players feel guilty about their wealth and they are using this film as penance Posted on Feb 22 2009 16:37

i am really sorry about your health,
but at times a mans experience could be bad specially when you have been 22yrs abroad, your change in surroundings would surely be different. There would have been reasons for going abroad and then coming back. I suppose country was always a secondary issue for you.
i am 40 yrs old and been staying in my country happily with really no regrets i love my people, my country, and i feel they are really human at heart. i have travelled from kerala till sikkim and its beautiful, and i find all including the policemen great, and helpful, but believe me there are some exceptions everywhere, not all policemen, or all airport authorites are like what you expressed, as far as dug up things are concerned thats work under progress. why do you miss out on 4lane highways, six lane highways, you dont get all in a day. even cities in America were dug up for laying underground metro few decades ago.
well its about a movie, which still remains a shit movie, there are no. of good things and bad in every country. lifes like that. take care. be positive things would be better for you. Posted on Feb 22 2009 16:17 - Report as inappropriate

- I wish someone would tell me why this film is still being played anywhere! usually films come and go within a weeks time frame. I thought it was awful. I am not a kid and know about the kind of grinding poverty which is all around the whole world and not just in India per se. In that respect, this is nothing new in the world. Many other films have come and gone which are far more worthy than this crap to keep around. It was an extremely depressing film to see and not at all entertaining. When I go to the movies, I like to be entertained not reminded further about the needless violence and grinding misery even though some of you think this was a victory over the same. - My huaband and I saw Slum Dog Millionaire a week ago. We both loved it and he is very hard to please. It gave us a look at another part of the world and it's culture. The story and character development were excellent. I am definitely hoping it wins the Oscar for Best Picture tonight. I have been recommending it to everyone I meet. Posted on Feb 22 2009 13:11

"must have left India and have settled abroad and who know nothing about the present India, which beautiful and worth seeing. "
I DISAGREE! I RETURNED TO INDIA AFTER 22 YEARS (LIKE A FOOL) AND WAS HORRIFIED AT THE FOLLOWING:
A) THE OVER, OVER POPULATION
B) THE FILTH EVERYWHERE IN BOMBAY AND CALCUTTA (FORCE ME TO SAY MUMBAI AND CALCUTTA, I WILL SLAP YOU!)
C) THE SLUMS WERE OVERWHELMING, THE STREETS DUG UP AND ELECTRIC WIRES EXPOSOSED WHILE CHILDREN PLAYED NEARBY.
D) THE CORRUPT POLICEMEN WAITING TO RIP OFF TAXI DRIVERS AT ALMOST EVERY CROSSING
E) THE GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS WITH NICE COATS OF PAINT WHILE THE REST OF THE COUNTRY CRUMBLES
F) THE RUDE AND INCOMPETENT EMPLOYEES AT THE AIRPORT WHO HARDLY COULD SPEAK ENGLISH BUT WORE THEIR UNIFORMS PROUDLY.
LASTLY, TO PLEASE THOSE FOOLS IN THAT THRID WORLD COUNTRY, I HOME SLUMDOG DOES NOT WIN A SINGLE OSCAR. LET THOSE BASTARDS BACK THERE LIVE IN SHIT....AND LOVE IT.
INDIA WAS BEAUTIFUL IN 1980. NOW IT IS MERELY FAKING EVERYTHING TO "APPEAR" TO BE A DEVELOPING COUNTRY. ALL I DEVELOPED WAS LUNG CANCER! Posted on Feb 22 2009 11:26 - Report as inappropriate

sammi i realize u r taking this movie like any other, concern here is different. As many have been saying that if an indian would have made this movie NO CHANCE OF OSCAR.
the most important of all is u and i know that INDIA ISNT LIKE THIS AT ALL but what of the foreign community who have never heard much about our country, (Its a movie, ok but if u really look, u will realize that it is to defame India..let danny hide behind any reasoning), unlike we indians have habit and subject in our schools knowing something of other countries, thats not the case with the international community, or the tourist who would really be mislead to some extent, and morever everything in the movie was exagerated to non-realistic thinks, many who have supported in terms of saying as a real situation, must have left India and have settled abroad and who know nothing about the present India, which beautiful and worth seeing.
