Sonnenfeld sends 'Space Chimps' into orbit

Barry Sonnefeld is producing an animated feature about a bunch of astronaut monkeys.

You can never have enough monkeys in film, so I'm pleased to announce that Barry Sonnenfeld is producing a new animated comedy called 'Space Chimps', which will follow the adventures of a group of primate astronauts.

The 'Men in Black' helmer had previously been working on the project as a creative consultant, contributing to writer/director Kirk DeMicco's screenplay about a bunch of monkeys who land on an uninhabited planet and help the aliens overthrow their despotic leader.

Jeff Daniels, Cheryl Hines, Stanley Tucci and Patrick Warburton are all lending their voices to the film, which is set to hit screens sometime in 2008.

'I'm thrilled to be producing 'Space Chimps' with John Williams, the fantastic producer of the 'Shrek' dynasty'. Sonnenfeld said. 'I've also wanted to work with Kirk DeMico for a long time; Kirk brings comedy and humanity to 'Chimps', which is no easy feat. I think 'Chimps' has the potential to be a very successful commercial movie, which will work for kids, teens and adults. I'm proud to be a part of it.'
