Stephen Sommers to remake 'When Worlds Collide'

Film concerns a dying planet on a collision course with the earth, and the drastic measures that scientists are forced to take.

Apr 11 2005

Stephen Sommers is to direct a big-budget remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic 'When Worlds Collide'.

Sommers, whose previous credits include 'The Mummy' and 'Van Helsing' will also script the film, which is being produced by Paramount.

Based on the novel by Philip Wylie and Edwin Balmer, the original 'When Worlds Collide' (reviewed here) told of a dying star on a collision course with earth.

Plans are made transport a small group of people to the nearest hospitable planet, in an effort to continue the human race.

And if that sounds familiar, the film was also the inspiration for the 1998 hits 'Armageddon' and 'Deep Impact'.

Sommers will begin writing immediately, although there is no word yet regarding a start date or cast.

I'm so pleased to see new directors discoving the old classics and bringing many of them back to life in our time to share some good stories with our young people today. These are truly stories of courage, desire to live, imagination and self preservation of the human race. Combining the religious aspect of a modern day Noah's Ark with the complete disctruction of the world and yet the chance for a new world and life to begin again as in the Bilble story of Noah.
