'Superman Returns' takes flight

See flying footage of the 'Man of Steel' as well as news that could potentially shift the production of 'Logan's Run' back a few months.

May  6 2005

This week we got our first glimpse of Clark Kent taking flight in 'Superman Returns'.

Bryan Singer's eagerly anticipated adaptation of the comic-book legend is currently lensing in Australia, and by way of the production's online journal, we got a quick look at the 'Man of Steel' doing his best impression of a plane.

Now admittedly it's only a brief animated taster of what we can expect from the finished film, but with the technical crew on hand to explain how huge rigs and giant green screens all fit into the equation, it seems that, yet again, we really will believe a man can fly.

In related news, Bryan Singer announced today that he plans to direct an adaptation of Randy Shilts' book 'The Mayor of Castro Street' for the big screen.

An examination of the life and death of San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk, one of California's first openly gay elected officials, who was assassinated in 1978, it will be adapted for the screen by Brandon Boyce (who also collaborated with Singer on 1997's 'Apt Pupil').

This isn't the first time Milk's story has been on its way to the screen; both Oliver Stone and Gus Van Sant were previously tipped to directors projects that stalled, while Robin Williams, Richard Gere and Daniel Day-Lewis were all set to star at various times.

No news yet regarding who will play Milk this time around, however.

And for all those fans of dark, futuristic sci-fi out there – have no fear – Singer still plans to remake 'Logan's Run' sometime after 'Superman Returns' wraps, although which project will make it into cinemas first remains to be seen.
