James Cameron returns to the director's chair

Having dabbled with IMAX, Cameron is to return to big budget action-adventure with 'Battle Angel'.

Having stayed away from mainstream moviemaking since 'Titanic' broke all box office records in 1997, director James Cameron is all set to return with not one, not two, but three big screen projects.

Having spent the best part of a decade making the brilliant IMAX documentaries 'Ghosts of the Abyss' and 'Aliens of the Deep' (as well as producing TV series 'Dark Angel'), the director is getting back to his roots, doing big budget spectacle and pushing the boundaries of technology and special effects.

First up, Cameron will make either 'Battle Angel', an epic action-adventure based on Yukito Kishiro's hugely successful graphic novels, or the mysteriously monikered 'Project 880', of which little is known at the moment.

Both will be shot in 3-D using custom-designed, high-definition cameras.

The Hollywood Reporter also claims that Cameron will use a photo-real version of the performance-capture technology used by Robert Zemeckis on 'The Polar Express'.

One or the other will go into production by the end of the year.

And once both big budget projects are in the can, the director will start work on 'The Dive', based on a Sports Illustrated article about freedivers Francisco Ferreras and Audrey Mestre.
