Baz bounces back with Australian epic

Baz Lurmann wants to cast Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe in his forthcoming WWII flick.

Feb  7 2006

When I bumped into director Baz Luhrmann in a London bar a while ago, he waxed lyrical about working with Nicole Kidman and Leonardo DiCaprio, and expressed his desire to cast the pair in his long-gestating Alexander the Great pic.

News has now emerged that Luhrmann is still planning to make the flick, but it won't be his next project. Instead, the flamboyant director will work on a currently untitled Australian epic.

Described as an Australian 'Gone With the Wind', the film is set during WWII and is expected to shoot in a remote area of the country in July or August.

As for cast, Luhrmann wants Kidman for this one as well, and is also hoping to bag Russell Crowe as the male lead.

In related news, a boxset containing Luhrmann's 'Red Curtain Trilogy' was released yesterday, and we thoroughly recommend the collection. Featuring 'Strictly Ballroom', 'William Shakepseare's Romeo & Juliet' and 'Moulin Rouge!', it really is a camp carnival of noise and colour, and the extensive extras are unmissable for any Baz-fans out there.
