'American Gangster' returns

The long-gestating project could finally go into production with Ridley Scott at the helm.

It's been green lit more times than a traffic light, but now it seems that the 1970s crime drama 'American Gangster' may finally go into production.

The flick, which tells the true story of a ruthless Harlem drug baron, was originally to be directed by Antoine Fuqua ('Training Day'), before he dropped out and Terry George ('Hotel Rwanda') took the reigns (for the full story on those shenanigans, click here).

Now however, it seems that Ridley Scott may direct the pic, with Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington potentially playing the leads.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but with that director and those actors involved, 'American Gangster' could be one of the big releases of 2007.
