Lots of street cred, low-rent locations, a plot based around snooker, and a nice big dollop of London villainy; add an unlikely, bumpy love story between Geldof's budding Hurricane Higgins and Steadman's tart with heart of gold, plus Smith on top form, and you could almost shout 'Frame and Match!' to all concerned. Sadly, though, what lets the film down is its preposterous ignorance of the game in question, which goes so deep that it will appal or amuse anyone who has managed two consecutive editions of Pot Black. When it steers clear of snooker, there's much to enjoy, but any film which lurches from grainy realism to outrageous cartoon with such abandon simply can't be number one.
