Menopausal male Wilder gets the frustrated hots for comely Ms Le Brock in this broad, unfunny Hollywood remake of the broad, only vaguely funny French original Pardon Mon Affaire (which at least had long-faced Jean Rochefort in its favour). Here writer/director/star Wilder's hankering after extra-marital excitement is indulged without question, while the female characters come off abominably: spouse Ivey is a kindly frump, spinster co-worker Radner's suspicion that she may have a secret admirer a comic delusion, much-ogled Le Brock unaccountably eager to bed her crinkly leading man. Stevie Wonder's songs would be instantly forgettable were it not for the inexplicable fact that the queasy 'I Just Called to Say I Loved You' spent weeks at the top of the UK charts.
