Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

This resourceful little number rings the changes on the PoW drama formula. For a start, events unfold under blazing skies in northern Italy, and the emphasis is as much on finding the traitor within the camp, as it is on the procedural details of the latest daring escape. Attenborough gets twitchy, Todd's stolid as ever, yet with the prisoners' production of Hamlet acting as cover for the breakout, there's a sly dig at the Brits' devotion to theatrical game-playing, exemplified by queeny duo Wilding and Price, who're rather more interested in treading the boards than burrowing out beneath them. Chaffey pieces together the layered plotting and escalating tension with his usual unassuming craftsmanship. (From a novel by Michael Gilbert.
