Desperate Man Blues (2003)
Director: Edward Gillan
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Like a character out of a Terry Zwigoff movie, Joe Bussard has been canvassing the USA door to door for old blues and country records for some 50 years, amassing an extraordinary collection of rare and one-of-a-kind 78s and holding fast to a militant genre loyalism - 'Rock's the cancer of music that ruined everything,' he insists. This affectionate documentary works from a narrow visual field, alternating largely unidentified archive footage (including an amazing performance clip of bluesman Son House) with shots of cigar-chomping Bussard singing, stamping and picking his air guitar in time with his beloved tunes.
