Routinely whitewashed biopic of blackface minstrel Daniel Decatur Emmett, finding fame, fortune and love in 19th century New Orleans, and managing to turn the title song into the Confederate battle hymn en route. A surprisingly attractive film, nevertheless, with the impressive period reconstructions - shot in glowing colours - helping to flesh out a desperately manufactured plot. Above all, it's directed by Sutherland with a care and affection that shows, relying on nostalgic, old-fashioned groupings that cunningly echo the quaintly formalised stage groupings of the resurrected minstrel show acts. Excellent cast, too.
