Dominated by Barrymore's stagy bravura, and especially by the celebrated transformation scenes, this early adaptation of Stevenson's story elsewhere rarely rises above the routine, despite the efforts of cinematographer Roy Overbough to shadow the squalid streets of London expressionistically.
