Dr Seuss' The Cat in the Hat (2003)
Director: Bo Welch
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Among the grown-ups prancing like pantomime characters in this live-action version of Dr Seuss's appealing rhyme-ridden comic book, Mike Myers looks and behaves like a cross between Barney the Dinosaur and the Lion in The Wizard of Oz - a sickly furball with a silly grimace and a clumsy gait. The original Cat was a subversive dude with a fondness for light-hearted, rebellious anarchy. His purpose, after all, was to inject some life into two bored kids left at home to twiddle their thumbs. But here the moralistic tale is turned into unappealing froth - unfunny, too. The film's one plus point is a pastel-coloured mise-en-scène that looks agreeably '50s.Author: DA
