Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

Despite its high reputation, a disappointing movie that dithers somewhere between horror and whodunit, never quite coming good on either and further crippling itself with some horrendous comic relief. The mystery concerns a moon murderer who cannibalises his victims and a one-armed scientist (Foster) working on a synthetic flesh substitute (and if you don't guess the killer's identity way ahead of time, your head needs examining). Stylish sets, though, and Curtiz adds some nice expressionistic flourishes, plus a bizarrely stilted but effective re-enactment of the crimes. It looks better if you're lucky enough to catch one of the rare two-colour Technicolor prints.
