In late l9th century Italy, the Murri family caused a scandal. Bolognini's reconstruction of their story looks like nothing so much as a Visconti sub-text: a slowly unfurled melodrama full of weighty but unexplored themes (political power, incest, science, religion) whose passion is almost entirely spent on the aristocratic stylishness of its looks. At least Morricone's resonant score lends emotional life.
