McNichol plays a tyro musician plagued by nightmares after fatally stabbing an assailant in her apartment; but the 'dream therapy' she undertakes to shake off the shock brings with it new traumas. Pakula treats all this as a Bergman-esque case study, but the male figures besieging the heroine's mind aren't drawn with sufficient firmness. Intriguing idea; ramshackle plotting.
