A taut, downbeat, New York-shot bank heist thriller, with the traditional dishonour among thieves revolving around the openly racial conflict between Ryan and Belafonte. Developed originally by Belafonte's own company after he'd picked up the rights to the William McGivern novel, the script was rewritten at Wise's suggestion to turn around the optimistic 'kin-under-the-skin' conclusion and provide a stunning shoot-out finale (in which the two corpses, ironically, become indistinguishable).
