On a trip to New York, commercials director Snipes bumps into and spends the night with UN employee Kinski. Thus is set in train a series of feelings, emotions and events driven by a logic of their own. Figgis has refashioned a bonkfest outline by Joe Eszterhas into a script focused evenly on the experience and motivations of its five main characters. Snipes, cast against type, is notable as a decent guy, happily married with two kids, for whom the affair constitutes a trigger for a quiet reassessment of both his marriage and his lost '60s idealism. Downey is affecting as the gay choreographer, still idealistic and still suffering for his art (AIDS, inevitably), with whom Snipes rekindles a friendship; and Kinski enlivens all her scenes.
