Angered when his Jag is pranged by aspiring romantic novelist Kate (Fox), Dave (Winstone), a Cockney Hebden Bridge 'motor' salesman, moves into her spare room in lieu of compensation. His wife (Faye) has left him. Kate's biological clock is ringing alarm bells, and IVF and lonely hearts dates offer no solution. Dave looks virile. This witty first feature from TV writer Mellor motors safely between the deep and the trivial, passing through many amusing scenes, handled in TV sitcom mode. If the tart language and occasional delight in brassy crudity ground the film on the cobbles of feelgood Northern comedy, the trite West Yorkshire exteriors reveal a movie anxious for the applause of international audiences.
