Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

There's nothing startlingly original about this tale of a gangster trying to go straight on his release from prison (no, he doesn't succeed for long), but Mochizuki finds a fresh, sidelong slant on even the most hackneyed situations. Yoshio Harada - a laconic tough guy in the Takeshi Kitano mould - makes Kuni a decent, if impatient man. His actions carry real weight, allowing the director to develop an unexpectedly romantic tone.
