Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

Taken from a theatrical text, filmed in grimy, tinted black-and-white, the minimal narrative tracks the prosaic interaction of four characters, young/old, male/female, through the interiors of urban Russia a generation or so ago. Mikhalkov transforms these unpromising ingredients with consummate skill into a film quite unlike the heroic or prestigious bombast prevalent in Russian cinema. At worst, a delightful, meticulous tour de force, and at least, a resonant and revealing miniature.
