McLaglen as a dumb-ox killer, Calleia the priest forced to respect the sanctity of the confessional. Heavy echoes of The Informer as McLaglen is hounded by the voice of conscience. Much capering Irishry, too, from Barry Fitzgerald as the wrong man awaiting execution. Calleia is remarkably good, while Farrow does his best, steering a smoothly moody course between the twin reefs of McLaglen and Fitzgerald.
