Barbary Coast (1935)
Director: Howard Hawks
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Perhaps not one of Hawks' greatest films, but none the less interesting. Set in the isolating fog and mist that immediately removes turn-of-the-century San Francisco from time and space, it deals with the competition between nightclub owner Robinson and prospector McCrea for Miriam Hopkins' dancer. Though the Hecht-MacArthur script is surprisingly poetic and derring-do, Hawks' direction is typically matter-of-fact.Author: PH
