The source for this debilitatingly tasteful tosh is the Chansons de Bilitis by Pierre Louys. Surprisingly, a strong hint of Louys' erotic spirit survives, transmitted mainly through the effective playing and poise of the two leading characters. But it needs much more than a strong hint to counteract Hamilton's fey and phony style.
