Bite the Bullet (1975)
Director: Richard Brooks
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
A straining think-piece on Western/American morality and values, Brooks' would-be epic charts a 700-mile horse race as a simplistic graph of courage, caring and callousness, with Hackman and Coburn emerging as Professional-like pillars of integrity from a meltingly macho proving ground. Any random thought ever committed to paper about the intrinsic 'messages' of the Western genre here turns up as a line of speechifying dialogue: the result is a folly stultified by its own seriousness.Author: PT
