From Time Out Film Guide

Likeable realist-tinged fantasy adventure by debut director (and co-writer) O'Neill: the last journey of a sacked security guard (Bruce Jones) who high-tails to Blackpool to end it all after discovering his wife's infidelity. This diffident, dictionary-reading man buys a Bolivian admiral's uniform (the Bolivians' have a land-locked cardboard navy, he's told) and pile of Encyclopedia Britannicas. He's intent on jumping off the pier thus laden, until a pretty student gets interested in his case.
