Slow-drawling Crane (Whitaker) invites steady two-time loser Pike (Rhames) to join a wild card Puerto Rican (Leguizamo), a racist psycho (Caruso), and a half-brain (Wahlberg) in a Boston art gallery heist. A guard is shot, Crane's gunned down by the law, and as the carload of villains escapes to rendezvous with the fence, the paranoia and bickering kicks straight in - and that's before they pick up dame-in-distress Fiorentino, who adds sexual rivalry to the deadly brew. The director seems unsure whether this is a violent thriller or a Ladykillers-style black comedy, so goes for both with disconcerting consequences. Peppered with darkly humorous set-pieces, the script is laced with elaborate non sequiturs.Author: WH
