Bopha! (1993)
Director: Morgan Freeman
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
After Cry Freedom, A Dry White Season and The Power of One, it's good to see a Hollywood movie about apartheid-era South Africa that comes from a black perspective. Adapted from a play by Percy Mtwa, Freeman's directorial debut is the involving and complex study of a proud black policeman (Glover) who believes he's doing right by upholding the rule of white law. His life is about to crumble around him when his son takes part in the protest against schooling in Afrikaans, and a hardline Special Branch officer (McDowell) is brought in to snuff out the agitation.
