A young British-born black woman is forced into encounters with sexism and racism in her attempt to negotiate some kind of future in a community where patriarchal power often erupts into street violence. As the heroine finds herself drawn into black militancy and feminism, a good chance is missed to develop the character of her more passive friend who wants no truck with 'Africa'. An important film for Britain in 1981, nevertheless, though in need of cutting to sharpen its edge.
