Calamity Jane (1953)
Director: David Butler
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Deadwood Stage, Black Hills of Dakota, (Just Blew in from the) Windy City: Fain-Webster evidently believed in the efficacy of place names, rightly as it turned out, since virtually all their songs for this modestly produced musical became standards. Biggest hit of all was 'Secret Love', the title of which, combined with the spectacle of Doris tomboyin' around in buckskins and britches (her exploits include the abduction of pouting showgirl McLerie), anecdotally made the film quite precious to lesbian audiences of the time. The energy of the music and of the supercharged Day just about prevail over the lethargy of Butler's (non-)direction.Author: BBa
