Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

Based on John Steinbeck's novel about a skid row community full of lovable tramps and prostitutes. Nolte is the ex-baseball star turned marine biologist whose life is changed by the love of a good woman, Winger. Sentimental comedies must walk a fine line between mawkishness and insipidity: although this one slips off the wire occasionally, a strong script, careful treatment and some spirited performances keep it aloft. John Huston serves as narrator.
