The Citadel (1938)
Director: King Vidor
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Solidly impressive adaptation of AJ Cronin's novel about an idealistic young doctor who, disillusioned by the hostility he encounters while trying to improve slum conditions in the Welsh mining valleys, takes up a Mayfair practice and finds his principles steadily eroded. Sweetened with a happy ending, it's still an effective piece of work, thanks to Donat's typically sturdy performance and Vidor's powerful direction.Author: GA
