Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

A romantic comedy set in NY: beautiful songwriter, Violet (Perabo), finds fame and everything she ever dreamed of despite her disapproving daddy (Goodman), working class background and all the odds in the world multiplied tenfold. But only after she learns to conquer stage fright by singing karaoke half-naked to crowds of sweaty drunks, one of several happy events to take place at a bar run by women. It could be argued that the constant stream of self-mocking touches makes for a less manipulative experience than many a Hollywood confection, though it's doubtful whether anyone familiar with producer Bruckheimer's record would consider him a misunderstood satirist.
