A '30s rarity: a Hollywood picture written and directed by women. Russell is a strong-willed but glacial spouse determined to rule both husband Boles and their home. She comes to regret her intransigence, however, when she becomes meshed in a murder case and finds there are few friends around to help out. Arzner gives Mary C McCall Jr's adaptation of a play by George Kelly a remarkably austere tone.
