Perhaps the least likely candidate ever for the 'extended version' trend is Avildsen's early cheapo feature: a contemporary of Joe, but made before the respectability of Save the Tiger, the bankability of Rocky, or the honour of removal from Saturday Night Fever. First released here as Super Dick, in deference to Garfield's private eye/cocksman role, it re-emerged with its original US title and ten minutes of footage restored to its choppy continuity. A bizarre soft-core comedy-thriller, its frantically parodic sexual anarchism is of a pretty reactionary species, and even the guilty guffaws sometimes obstinately refuse to come; though Garfield's gargoyle slob is definitely one for the Divine crowd to savour.Author: PT
