Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

Lush but formulaic Fox musical, set on the Barbary Coast during the Naughty Nineties and charting the constancy of Faye's broken heart as she quietly rises to fame as a singing star while Payne, brashly acquiring ideas above his station, gets into entrepreneurial messes and tags after a Nob Hill heiress. Notable mainly for the vivid Technicolor and Faye's rendition of the Oscar-winning song 'You'll Never Know' (although it's repeated once too often as she waits for Payne to get the message).
