'Old enough to fight, too young to vote' - the cry of National Service conscripts in Korea who resented being placed in the firing line of someone else's civil war. The conflict wasn't popular with British film-makers either - too many sensitive areas. This patrol movie, shot in Spain three years after the armistice, touches lightly on most of them, though it deflects the National Service issue by making the most hysterical malcontent (Lewis) equally indignant that a lad of his calibre is having to muck in with all these rough proles. Tension with army regulars and death from 'friendly fire' are also addressed. Otherwise, it all seems slightly pointless, though inventively shot by Freddie Francis (his first).
