The Man With a Cloak (1951)
Director: Fletcher Markle
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Intriguing period melodrama/Gothic thriller set in 1840s New York, with Caron as a young Frenchwoman arriving from Paris to beg a financial favour of her curmudgeonly grandfather (Calhern), and discovering that his housekeeper and butler (Stanwyck and DeSantis) are planning to kill the old man for his money. But dashing stranger Cotten steps in to help. Peppered with literary allusions (Poe in particular), shot on elegant MGM sets, highly atmospheric, and endowed with fine performances from a strong cast, it's well worth a watch.Author: GA
