Santa Fe Trail (1940)
Director: Michael Curtiz
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
History is bunk, and politics pushed aside in favour of professionalism, as Flynn's Jeb Stuart - the future Rebel general - leads a bunch of West Point graduates against abolitionist John Brown, and finally gets involved in the battle at Harper's Ferry, thus beginning the Civil War. Far from liberal in attitude (Massey's John Brown is seen as a fanatic, ruthless and violent; the blacks are portrayed as barely willing to fight for their freedom), it's nevertheless fast and spectacular enough to warrant a look, if only to see Reagan playing Custer. Now that was inspired casting.Author: GA
