Les Savates du Bon Dieu (1999)
Director: Jean-Claude Brisseau
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Fred, an illiterate, immature thug, reacts in character when his girlfriend ups and leaves him - attacking a neighbour with an axe, robbing a post office and taking to the road with another, more compliant girl in tow. But as Fred progresses fitfully towards redemption and a sense of responsibility, Brisseau bit by bit fantasticates the action, taking in a spectacular supernatural intervention, plus serial manifestations in various guises by M'Bo as a sort of benevolent Clare Quilty. It doesn't really work (Merhar is irksome and unpersuasive as the ever-present Fred), but it's sympathetic in aim and quite distinctive in manner.Author: BBa
